Case study

Designing App for Theater Seat Reservation

My Role

I worked on all aspects of the design including user research, interviews, paper and digital wireframing, prototyping, usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and design iterations.

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to design an app that helps people purchase or reserve theater or cinema seats for the respective movies of their interest. Because of the daily activities of individuals and also the queuing process in making seat reservations, this app will help a long way in making this process fast.

Target Audience

Parents / Teenagers / Age 18 - 50

Research Study

I conducted interviews to learn more about the needs of the people for whom I'm building. Young working individuals who didn't want to wait in line for their tickets and refreshments were one of the main user groups identified.

This research validated predictions about the obstacles that movie watchers in Delta, Nigeria confront, such as long queues, but it also found new issues, such as dissatisfaction with limited snack options. It also identified other motivations that drive people to the movies, such as boredom and the desire to spend an entire day there.

User Pain Points

1 - Long Queue

Working people are more likely to arrive at the theater too soon because they do not want to wait in line or miss the start of the movie.

2 - Best-possible seat availability

In addition to the foregoing, uncertainty about seat availability may cause users to postpone their visit to the theater until a time when it is not as crowded.

3 - Best-possible seat availability

Another recurring criticism was that there were insufficient snack alternatives to appeal to a variety of tastes.

Persona's

I created a persona that will represent the user

Wireframe

I used paper and pencil to draw out how the product would look based on the personas and problem description for this case study, then transformed the design into a digital wireframe.

Digital Wireframe

Low-Fidelity Prototype

usability study

After creating my Digital Wireframe, I conducted a Usability Study for the product and made some changes based on the feedback I received after the Usability Study.

Research Questions

1. How long does it take for a user to browse and book for seat?

2. Are users able to successfully make reservation that they want?

3. What can we learn from the steps users took to reserve seat?

Participants

5 participants

2 Males, 2 female and 1 non-binary individual between the age of 18-50

Adjustment Made After Feedback

HOME SCREEN
On the Home Screen, most of the users were finding it difficult to use the search label or button. So I redo the search label, making the text there clear so that the user will understand it.
SELECT SEAT SCREEN
Users indicate that they are finding it difficult to select a seat because they cannot identify the seats that are available for reservation and the reserved seat.

Mockups/High-fidelity

The Mockup is the final polished design for the product

Going Forward

After creating my Digital Wireframe, I conducted a Usability Study for the product and made some changes based on the feedback I received after the Usability Study.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, the user is satisfied, and the app gives the impression that Genesis Cinema is concerned about meeting their needs.

One quote from peer feedback: “The app made it so easy and it will be good if other Cinema owners could do the same .”

What i Learned

While designing the Genesis Cinema app, I discovered that the initial app concepts are only the beginning of the process. Each iteration of the app's design was influenced by usability studies and peer feedback.

Next Step

Accessibility: The study did not include any participants with visual impairments. While I had the aim to do so, locating someone with such difficulties who also went to the movies was challenging.

Conduct another round of usability studies to validate whether the pain points users experienced have been effectively addressed
